Macro Elements of film form

The Number 23. 

Representation

The social groups that are represented on screen in this film include married heterosexual couples, criminals and children. Nearly every social group is featured in this film as the film analyses the effect of superstition on a community. The representations are relatively effective as the characters are portraying and acting how they would in real life - if the situation was real. The reason that the representativeness of the scenario and character actions are reliable is to create a connection between the viewer and character. This is done in order to subconciously question the viewer if they would act the same in the situation and allow them to reflect on their own emotional responses to the film content.

Genre

The genre of this film is a combination between mystery and thriller. This is made evidently clear because the camera angles that are in the trailer appear to be 'jumpy', rushed and inconsistent. Relating this to the genre, this could be representative of the viewers heartbeat as the film continues, this is typical of a thriller to intrigue the viewer. It is also a mystery - this is because the film does not specify what is going to happen. For example, it is not evident from the first 20 minutes what will happen in the rest of the film. Although, it does infer something is going to occur, eventhough not specifying exactly what this may be. 

Narrative

'The Number 23' film has a non-linear narrative. This is because the film features flashbacks, side stories and other effects which makes the narrative clear and effective. The narrative is effective because the film then allows the viewer to understand the film towards the end of the film. Although, this can be argued as a negative feature as the viewers may become dissinterested, it allows the viewers that did continue to the end to become connected to the film as it gives them the sudden realisation what the film is about. Also, at the end of the film, the viewer's perspective is aimed to change as they hopefully question who the number will go after next. 

Audience

The target audience for this film is people who enjoy thrillers, mystery films and people who enjoy developing their understanding of conspiracy theories. The target audience would enjoy the film as they would feel connected to the film. Also, they would enjoy the film as they would feel satisfied with the content of the film and not feel as if it went off on a 'tangent.' However, other spectators would probably be dissinterested in this film. This is because the content of the film is very 'full-on' and indepth considering the genre and content.
