Mise En Scene in 'Him&Her.'

Image result for him and her

In a Media lesson, we were set to watch an episode from the TV series, 'Him&Her.' During the episode, we had to analyse an area of Mise En Scene. I was allocated with costume and makeup - which was evident that alot could be said about the matter. For example, Steve's character presents a lower class member of society as the conditions he lives in appear to be of low standard, and his costume is unkempt and presumably ungroomed (which infers that he is of a lower class status of society.) This contrasts to Janet (Steve's mum), for example, as her character appears to be well dressed and presentable in contrast to Steve - she is also shown to be wearing makeup which connotes that she takes pride in her appearance. This aspect of the costume and makeup element of Mise En Scne creates a visual contrast between characters; that the unconcious mind of the audience will analyse and reflect upon appropriately - even as far as allocating social class roles to (as the audience learns more about a character.) This can also be seen in other televised sitcoms/programes as the characters in 'Downton Abbey' are presumed to be upper class purely based on the costume and makeup (e.g. how they dress, what they look like, how they present themselves to the audience etc.)
