Mise en Scene; Indiana Jones
Costume
The costume of Indiana Jones replicates an arachaeologist or adventurer. This aspect of his costume infers that his character has some mid to high experience of the setting. The colours of the costume portray some element of camoflage and appropriation to the setting - which would be typical of a standard archaeologist or adventurer. However, the secondary character, dressed in the polar opposite of what the main character is seen to be wearing. This character is wearing a leather jacket, presumably jeans and converse shoes. This gives off the impression that he is an average teenager and does not know alot about the topic that the main character is persuiting.
Lighting
The primary source of lighting in this scene is the large light, underneath the secondary character. The purpose of this was to create an element of front lighting. Also, the colour of this lighting is white, which indicates that the characters are exploring an unknown cave/crevice. This is also quite a prominant colour so it enhances the facial features and expression. The angle of the lighting infers that the two characters are investigating the unknown - this is also depicted by their facial expression in this scene. No back or side light has been used, all of the lighting source is from the two torches. The light that is seen in the background - is the reflected light from the two flashlights in the scene.
Figure Expression and Movement
The figure of the main character (Indiana Jones) is low and grounded. This infers that the character is intrigued in what ever is present out of shot. The character is seen to be quite relaxed - but still maintaining a posture that is appropriate for the character role - this suggests that the character is aknowledging the presence of something major out of shot. Also, the character's facial expression is serious and concerned - the viewer can infer that there is a significant presence out of shot. On the other hand, the secondary character (Mutt Williams) is holding a fairly ridgid frame in his figure. This suggests that the character is willing to learn from the main character and is 'switched on.' He is also holding the main source of light - which infers that he holds some level of importance to the plot. Also, the facial expressions that this character is holding defines the fact that they are willing to learn and are also intrigued by the presence outside of the shot on screen. By both characters being somewhat intrigued by a presence out of shot, this creates an element of connection between the characters and the audience.
Setting
The setting of this scene is very important in the storyline of the rest of the production. This is because the genre of the film is very adventurer orientated. Also, the presence of the fossils in the scene amplifies the effect that the cave is possibly abandonned and or decaying. The colour of the setting was also very well contrasted with the main characters costume as it then emphasises the effect that the storyline had an element of adventure combined in it. As well as this, the ledge that is directly infront of the character's feet, creates a strong sense of depth in the scene - this is also amplified by the shaddows from the light source as the depth of the scene is then magnified.
